#bookreview The Beauty Doctor. Elizabeth Hutchinson Bernard @EHBernardAuthor

“Perhaps you’ve never thought of it this way, but beauty is power,” Dr. Rome said, with the calm certainty of a man who knows he speaks the truth. “And with enough power, Miss Platford, one can achieve anything.”

In the spring of 1907, Abigail Platford finds herself unexpectedly adrift in New York City. Penniless and full of self-doubt, she has abandoned her dream of someday attending medical school and becoming a doctor like her late father. Instead, she takes a minor position in the office of Dr. Franklin Rome, hoping at least to maintain contact with the world of medicine that fascinates her. She soon learns that the handsome and sophisticated Dr. Rome is one of a rare new breed of so-called beauty doctors who chisel noses, pin back ears, trim eyelids and inject wrinkles with paraffin. At first skeptical, she begins to open her mind, and then her heart, to Dr. Rome. But when his proposed partnership with a proponent of the early twentieth century eugenics movement raises troubling questions, Abigail becomes ensnared in a web of treachery that challenges her most cherished beliefs about a doctor’s sacred duty and threatens to destroy all she loves. A suspenseful work of historical fiction grounded in the social and moral issues of the Edwardian era in America. (This book is one of six finalists in the category of Published Fiction, 2017 Arizona Literary Contest.)

About the Author

Elizabeth’s first love was music. As a vocalist, flutist and songwriter, she toured for nearly a decade. Her musical compositions range from rock to pop to smooth jazz and New Age.

A summa cum laude Communications graduate of Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), Elizabeth eventually traded her microphone for a pen. She settled in California, promoting international expositions for the music trade (Director of Public Relations, NAMM).  In 1997, she moved to New York City where she was the Communications Director for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.  She was instrumental in founding the internationally subscribed Aesthetic Surgery Journal and served as its Executive Editor. Later, she was a primary consultant to the National Cosmetic Network, in partnership with the plastic surgery program of Johns Hopkins University, and an editorial consultant for the book Be Your Best: A Comprehensive Guide to Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Her in-depth knowledge of plastic surgery lends a unique perspective to her historical novel, The Beauty Doctor, while music takes center stage in her upcoming book, Temptation Rag. Both stories are set in turn-of-the-century New York City.

About her novel, The Beauty Doctor, Elizabeth says, “I have always been fascinated by the early days of cosmetic surgery and have been aware that many people don’t realize how far back it goes—even further, actually, than the time of my novel. But I thought the Edwardian era would be a great period in which to explore the deeper meanings of beauty, power and success—especially because that was when many women began to think of such choices as rightfully theirs. My heroine, Abigail Platford, first has to overcome grief and self-doubt before she can confront forces within society seeking to define beauty and success only as they see it. Her journey is a discovery of hope, compassion and self-determination.”

Elizabeth currently lives in Arizona with her husband and their black Lab, Pearly Mae.

My Review

Abigail’s engagement reception is here, but the fact that her fiancée Arthur doesn’t seem so keen, indicated in line, “there was a young man standing there, rather handsome in a delicate sort of way, with a look of distress about him that mirrored Arthur’s distracted air,” means the marriage is soon called off, and by Abigail who was reluctant to join Arthur’s rich family, and have the role of a wife, so it would have been a marriage of convenience. She met at this reception a man with an acrid scent, who will soon set Abigail on a new path, and employment, as, with her engagement off, Abigail is now without a home, and destitute.

The man is Doctor Franklin Rome, and what follows is a slow unfolding story of deception, intrigue, and mystery. The reveal of Abigail’s background, why she is so alone in the world, and her father, her biggest influence, and the tragedy that occurred plays into the text.

Abigail is shocked to find it is not medicine that Rome is a Doctor in, but beauty surgery, or what we now call cosmetic, or plastic, surgery. She agrees to become his assistant.

There seems to be two stories here, one is the very infancy of Rome’s beauty surgery business, and the astute observations between the lofty heights of the rich, where the money is, and the poor, who are used as guinea pigs to practise the surgery on. Abigail wishes she can help the poverty stricken children, and is a caring person, who does grow as a character, and becomes more confident with her decisions. Rome does not so much undergo transformation, he is a baddie through and through. You can see right through him.

From us finding out the methods that are used to get bumps out of noses, and remove wrinkles, Rome becomes ambitious, as he partners with a man willing to provide the ideas, the chutzpah

and to draw in investors interested in funding a beauty surgery, while the ultimate prize, which will elicit much attention, and therefore business, the operation of smoothing the bumps on the noses of conjoined twins. This could be a risky procedure, and the twins guardian is against it, but duped into parting with them, it is only Abigail who can step in and stop the twins becoming fodder for the unscrupulous surgeon Rome, and his business partner.

The Beauty Doctor questions what is beauty, what are the benefits of surgery? And also the roles of women at that time – the ‘new woman’ who dresses like a man, and has short hair, and the women, like Abigail, who find themselves unable to have a high position in medicine. Simply because they are a woman.

I was not at all surprised one of the author’s favourite author’s is Sarah Walters, as their styles are quite similar. This is a solid debut. I enjoyed The Beauty Doctor even more reading it a second time, and it’s an excellent fictional account of cosmetic surgery, that continues to be debated today, and was even more of a novelty in the early 1900’s, that you won’t often find written about, with such great accuracy as well. It also talks about the woman’s role in society, and that’s a relevant subject too. There can be a lot learnt from the past.

And I am told Elizabeth is working on her next book Temptation Rag, which I cannot wait to read!

Guest Post: Character Interview

Hello! Thank you so much for having me today!! I wanted to share some things that you may find interesting about my main character Kaeleigh from The Age of Alandria series.
Ahem, throat clearing*

Chel: Excuse me, Morgan, but I think if anyone is going to talk about Kaeleigh it should be me! 😉 *Chel bounces behind me.
Me: Well, hi Chel, I didn’t know you would be here, but I should’ve known better. Where’s Finn?
*Chel nods to the back of the room*
*Finn stands at the back of the room, arms crossed, and scowling*

Chel: Oh Finn, relax. I’m not going to share anything Kaeleigh wouldn’t want people to know.
*Finn Slinks over from where he was skulking in the corner with a cheesy grin*

Finn: I know, that’s why Chel and I will take it from here.
Me: Okay, well, everyone let me introduce you to Kaeleigh’s two best friends… Finn and Chel.
Chel: I’m so excited! Thank you for having us here today.
Finn: Um, Chel… they didn’t. We hijacked this post.
Chel: Technicalities Finn *waves hand flippantly* Plus who knows Kaeleigh better than her BEST friend?
Finn: (s)
Chel: Huh?
Finn: friends. You said friend. I added the ‘s’.
Chel: Hmm. Well, you better hope that Morgan doesn’t do something drastic to you in book 2.
Finn: *glares*
Chel: Just sayin’. Ok let’s get this show on the road! I’ll go first…
Finn: Of course you will *mumbles under his breath*
Chel: *glares back* those were my dagger eyes
Finn: Oh is that what that was? I thought maybe you just had something in both your eyes
Me: Ok you two, this is suppose to be about Kaeleigh. These people have things to do, get on with it!
Chel: First off, you should know that Kaeleigh is the best friend a girl *ahem* or guy (eye roll to Finn) could have. She is loyal and caring, she always thinks of us before herself.
Finn: I’m not sure that isn’t something they couldn’t figure out.
Chel: Fine. You go.
Finn: *sighs* I don’t like this. I don’t think she would appreciate us talking about her.
Chel: Oh! I got one… Kaeleigh is a restless sleeper. She kicks!
Finn: *smirks* And she talks in her sleep.
Chel: See this is fun.
Finn: *frowns*
Chel: Hey I’m doing all the work here. Your turn.
Finn: Kaeleigh calls me if she hasn’t heard from me after a couple days, just to make sure I’m not lying dead, alone, on the floor in my apartment.
Chel: Oookay… that was morbid, Finn. Back to me. Remember last winter when I found an injured stray cat? I tried to take care of it, but it got real bad. Kaeleigh helped me take it to the vet. *pause and looks down, hands wringing* That’s why she got fired from that secretary job.
Finn: *growls* Chel, you know she’s allergic to cats. You should have called me.
Chel: I know, but you would have just told me not to bother. Did you even hear me though, I’m the reason she lost her job.
Finn: *shrugs* It obviously didn’t bother her that much—she got another one. It’s just a job to her. You are her family and that means something.
Chel: *takes deep breath* You’re right Finn, thanks. You know, you’re all right when you want to be. I think Kaeleigh is the only person who can make you smile, but you know that, don’t you?
Finn *stands up non-chalantly* Hey Morgan, I think we are finished here, if you need to say anything.
Me: Thanks Finn for remembering that I was even here. Chel, anything else you want to add?
Chel: No, I’m good. Thank you for letting us hijack your post. It was fun! *pokes Finn*

Ok, well, I hope you were able to learn a little something about my main character and maybe even a little about the dynamic of her posse. Thank you for indulging my characters today!

Guest Post: What Sort of Monster Are You?

QUEEN OF IRON AND BLOOD, book two in the Shattered Realms series, takes place in a world of monsters. Check out the exclusive excerpt below, and use the Chimera Generator to create your own!

A figure waited on the ledge above him, silent, dark wings still. Hunter could feel her though, the ancient energy recharged like the rest of his world. “I cannot leave them sleeping,” he told her. “The risk is too great.” If Malkyn killed Hunter, if he were not able to return, these new Iron Bound would never be awakened. It would be an eternal wasting away, a thousand-year massacre.

The virago made a noise like the purr of a horse, though her face was something more human than mare. In all fairness, though, she was more beast than anything else. “Your queen can bear it, she thinks,” the virago said.

Hunter turned to look up at the virago, her dark mane swept back over the slick black of her shoulders. From his vantage point, Hunter couldn’t help but think this was the last thing some of the Iron Bound had ever seen—sleek fur on a winged beast, her curved talons shining like onyx overhead. Hunter nodded. “I believe she can—if it is to be done at all, Mackenzie has the strength for it.” But it would not be safe. She would not be safe.

The virago brought herself to her full height. “Your queen does not stand alone.”

Excerpt

Noticing my distraction, Allison took a break from her monologue to turn and follow my gaze. “Who’s the hunk?”

“That creep has been staring over here since we sat down,” I grumbled.

Allison smirked. “He’s hot, maybe you should go teach him some manners.”

I raised an eyebrow at her comment. “I will never understand your taste in men. He looks like an overly-primped jerk.” Allison raised both of her eyebrows in surprise. “My Xoe, you sure are feeling judgy today. That’s supposed to be my job.” She rose from her seat and looked over at Creepy Guy. Realizing her intent, I reached for her arm and tried to pull her back down.

“No way Al,” I chided. “Don’t even think about it.” Ignoring my comment, Allison pulled her arm away from me. With a mischievous smile, she hustled away from our table, then waltzed right up to Creepy Guy. She sat down on the other side of his table, facing him and Max. I shook my head and turned back to Lucy. We exchanged similar looks of resignation. I sighed loudly. “And so it begins.” Lucy began to reply, then quickly turned her gaze down to the tabletop. I turned partially around to see what had interrupted her. Allison was walking toward us, leading Creepy Guy by the hand. They came to stand at the head of our table. Allison twined her arm through Creepy Guy’s, which remained limp.

“Girls, this is Dan. He’s new here.” Allison nodded in Lucy’s direction. “That’s Lucy,” then nodded to me, “and that lovely example of radiant good cheer is Xoe.” Allison released Dan’s arm and took a seat next to Lucy, leaving only one option for Dan. I had a moment to glare at Allison for her cruelty, then Dan sat next to me with a quizzical look, like he didn’t quite know what I was. I quickly turned away and found my gaze wandering back to Max, who was now sitting alone, looking confused. He stood and walked straight out of the cafeteria like a sleepwalker. I stared for a moment at the now empty doorway, wondering what had gotten into Max to make him act so strangely. When I turned back to our table, I noticed Dan’s gaze had drifted to Lucy. The look he gave her was far different from the confused one he had given me. He looked at Lucy like she was a piece of meat, and he wasn’t even trying to hide it. I expected Lucy to be squirming under the pressure of Dan’s gaze, but instead she offered him a coy smile. My mouth fell open in surprise. I’d never seen Lucy flirt before, and I couldn’t believe she’d chosen that moment to start. Dan didn’t really seem her type, though I didn’t actually know what her type was. Lucy, like me, didn’t date a lot. Allison, on the other hand, I was used to. She flirted up dates on a regular basis, and had no problem talking to guys. She was born to flirt, and flirt she did. Before I knew what had happened, Allison’s flirting magic had involved Dan in our shopping plans for the weekend, which had been altered to movie plans . . . gre-at. I would have rather gone shopping, and that was saying a lot. Dan had not made a good first impression on me. My own thoughts began to tune out the conversation as Allison continued to quiz Dan on where he was from and any other inane fact she could think of. I felt uncomfortable sitting next to Dan. Waves of creepiness emanated from him. Okay, so maybe “waves of creepiness” was a little dramatic, but there was something very strange about him. He made my skin crawl. He shifted so that his elbow brushed mine, and struggled not to rub the goose bumps that instantly erupted on my arms. I scooted away and watched him have a seemingly normal conversation with Lucy and Allison, while I tried to pinpoint what had me on edge. Listening to him talk, he seemed perfectly normal, but his face shattered the illusion. His gaze never left Lucy, even when he was answering one of Allison’s questions. It was like he was trying to memorize every small detail of her face. It was downright unnerving.

Guest Post: The Making of Willow North

Willow North, the main character of Pretender to the Crown, was never meant to be anything but a throwaway line. Background: my series The Crown of Tremontane was written out of order, with the third book, Agent of the Crown, written first. In that book, the main character, a princess and a spy, mentions Willow in passing, saying she always felt sorry for her because it was such a frivolous name. That was it—Willow was just a bud on the North family tree, a passing joke to give my spy princess depth.

I don’t remember when Willow became a real character. Certainly by the time I wrote Rider of the Crown (second book in the series, third written) because I had to go back to Servant of the Crown (first book, second written) to insert Willow and her history. At that point, she was an important figure in Tremontanan history, but I knew no more about her than that. But she had captured my imagination.

I love stories about rogues, and making Willow a thief satisfied that interest. But Willow had to be more than that; she had to be someone who could lead others. Willow starts the book a loner, focused on her work and disconnected from almost everyone around her. Throughout the course of the trilogy, she discovers she cares deeply, not only about her friends but about her country as well.

Willow also has magic in a time when the country of Tremontane is ruled by magic-wielding tyrants called Ascendants. Her relationship with magic is complicated: no one can learn she has magic, or she’ll be forced to become an Ascendant, but she depends on her magic, the ability to sense worked metal, for her living. Willow’s talent was my husband’s idea, and it’s the perfect ability for a thief to have.

It’s taken years for Willow to go from being a throwaway line to being the main character of a trilogy. I hope readers will find her as fascinating as I do.

  • Format:Paperback & ebook, 472 pages
  • Release Date: January 3rd 2014

From the very beginning it was all Toad’s fault. A blundering, quick-talking thief, he was the one who cut a deal with the dangerous Edward P. Owl: track down the ingredients to the Seeking Solution, or else. Twenty-five thousand gorents, he’d said to her. That was all it took for Melena, a lonely orphan with a knack for potions, to pack her bags and join in on the quest. From the majestic forest of Holly-Harp Wood to the labyrinth caves of Dunthur to the frigid waters of the Blackens, they search for Owl’s ingredients. Toad and Melena must face sea dragons, cave monsters, birds as large as wagons, kidnappers, and thieves – so many thieves. Toad’s in it to save his head – cross Owl and start digging your own grave. Melena’s in it to get paid so she can start a new life, one that includes her missing brother. But you really can’t trust thieves.

Excerpt

A night Toad had been sure could not become any more unsettling had taken a jarring left turn. So he couldn’t get the ingredients as easily as he’d expected. He was able to shrug that off. So what if it took time to get them. Toad felt that snatching up this odd girl had been the first thing to go right all day. Dawn was steadily creeping over the rooftops of the houses as they walked. Toad glanced at her. She was scrawny and her yellow-blonde hair was long and braided, wispy, brittle ends poking out at odd places. She was as plain as a broom with her second-hand clothes. He had been surprised to discover her to be so drab, what with her owning a Spit-Fire (they were common, but still costly) and being such a fluent reader. Then again, Wilson could read so that didn’t say much. “What’s your name?” asked the girl. “Toad.”

She covered up a laugh with a snort.

“What?” Toad demanded, stopping and facing her, early morning risers already moving around them on the street.

“Well — it’s just, you don’t look anything like a toad,” she said, awkwardly.

Toad shrugged and continued walking. “My dad’s got a sense of humor.”

New Adult Paranormal

Paperback & ebook, 414 pages

October 23rd 2017 by Nikki Jefford

It’s the season for giving…and starting over?

A reindeer farm without Santa wouldn’t be Christmas in Marissa Gray’s Alaskan hometown. Luckily Chris Allen’s there to pinch-hit, although for Marissa, seeing her ex-fiancé again brings back memories of what might have been.

Ten years after their breakup, the feelings between the wildlife biologist and blue-eyed fisherman are stronger than ever. Only now there’s a foster kid in the mix, as well as the shocking crime that cost Marissa her job and her family’s security. She and Chris need to find their way to a meeting of minds and hearts to make this truly a season for second chances…

Guest Post: Wolf Hollow – A Holiday Playlist

Civilization might have fallen, but that doesn’t mean the shifters in Wolf Hollow don’t know how to celebrate! Usually it’s all about full moons and claiming ceremonies. While there isn’t electricity, they have their drums for music making and dancing.

Here’s a playlist of their favorite holiday tunes to beat out on the drums.

1. The Little Drummer Boy

2. Sleigh Ride

3. Jingle Bells

4. Frosty The Snowman

5. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer

6. Wizards in Winter by Trans-Siberian Orchestra

7. Up On The House Top

8. Feliz Navidad

9. Joy To The World

10. Santa Claus Is Coming to Town

Happy HOLLOWdays!
