#MiniReview Hush your Gums. Sheldon Sinnamon.

Hush your Gums is the third book of poetry by Sheldon. I enjoyed his other two immensely. Hush your Gums is a little different from those. It does still contain illustrations, and is pleasing to the eyes. Sheldon wears his heart on his sleeve. Hush your Gums does seem to be a jumble of poems. There is the odd piece of concrete imagery, (beautiful to read), inspiring poems, poems that used a different perspective, poems that allowed us to delve into Sheldon’s memories, (such as in the poems Young at Hart, and Camp Camp which are personal memories of past friendships), and opinions of certain subjects. I did like the writing. I do enjoy reading anything of Sheldon’s, but I was put off by the way the poems were presented to me in Hush your Gums, but don’t let that put you off. Guest Post: Character Interview

Hello! Thank you so much for having me today!! I wanted to share some things that you may find interesting about my main character Kaeleigh from The Age of Alandria series.
Ahem, throat clearing*

Chel: Excuse me, Morgan, but I think if anyone is going to talk about Kaeleigh it should be me! 😉 *Chel bounces behind me.
Me: Well, hi Chel, I didn’t know you would be here, but I should’ve known better. Where’s Finn?
*Chel nods to the back of the room*
*Finn stands at the back of the room, arms crossed, and scowling*

Chel: Oh Finn, relax. I’m not going to share anything Kaeleigh wouldn’t want people to know.
*Finn Slinks over from where he was skulking in the corner with a cheesy grin*

Finn: I know, that’s why Chel and I will take it from here.
Me: Okay, well, everyone let me introduce you to Kaeleigh’s two best friends… Finn and Chel.
Chel: I’m so excited! Thank you for having us here today.
Finn: Um, Chel… they didn’t. We hijacked this post.
Chel: Technicalities Finn *waves hand flippantly* Plus who knows Kaeleigh better than her BEST friend?
Finn: (s)
Chel: Huh?
Finn: friends. You said friend. I added the ‘s’.
Chel: Hmm. Well, you better hope that Morgan doesn’t do something drastic to you in book 2.
Finn: *glares*
Chel: Just sayin’. Ok let’s get this show on the road! I’ll go first…
Finn: Of course you will *mumbles under his breath*
Chel: *glares back* those were my dagger eyes
Finn: Oh is that what that was? I thought maybe you just had something in both your eyes
Me: Ok you two, this is suppose to be about Kaeleigh. These people have things to do, get on with it!
Chel: First off, you should know that Kaeleigh is the best friend a girl *ahem* or guy (eye roll to Finn) could have. She is loyal and caring, she always thinks of us before herself.
Finn: I’m not sure that isn’t something they couldn’t figure out.
Chel: Fine. You go.
Finn: *sighs* I don’t like this. I don’t think she would appreciate us talking about her.
Chel: Oh! I got one… Kaeleigh is a restless sleeper. She kicks!
Finn: *smirks* And she talks in her sleep.
Chel: See this is fun.
Finn: *frowns*
Chel: Hey I’m doing all the work here. Your turn.
Finn: Kaeleigh calls me if she hasn’t heard from me after a couple days, just to make sure I’m not lying dead, alone, on the floor in my apartment.
Chel: Oookay… that was morbid, Finn. Back to me. Remember last winter when I found an injured stray cat? I tried to take care of it, but it got real bad. Kaeleigh helped me take it to the vet. *pause and looks down, hands wringing* That’s why she got fired from that secretary job.
Finn: *growls* Chel, you know she’s allergic to cats. You should have called me.
Chel: I know, but you would have just told me not to bother. Did you even hear me though, I’m the reason she lost her job.
Finn: *shrugs* It obviously didn’t bother her that much—she got another one. It’s just a job to her. You are her family and that means something.
Chel: *takes deep breath* You’re right Finn, thanks. You know, you’re all right when you want to be. I think Kaeleigh is the only person who can make you smile, but you know that, don’t you?
Finn *stands up non-chalantly* Hey Morgan, I think we are finished here, if you need to say anything.
Me: Thanks Finn for remembering that I was even here. Chel, anything else you want to add?
Chel: No, I’m good. Thank you for letting us hijack your post. It was fun! *pokes Finn*

Ok, well, I hope you were able to learn a little something about my main character and maybe even a little about the dynamic of her posse. Thank you for indulging my characters today!

Young Adult Sci-Fi, Fantasy

Coming 2018

Mackenzie Scott is trapped in another realm, but that’s the least of her problems. Magic runs through her veins, and even now she can feel herself changing. She’s managed to help her brother, but in exchange, she’s turning into one of them. Worse, Mackenzie’s not just a monster. She’s their queen.

Hunter had one job: open the gateway between worlds to keep his realm alive. He hadn’t counted on betrayal, or being saved by a human girl. And he’d never guessed he couldn’t trust his own king. Now he’s snared in an unwinnable catch, and his only choice is to leave the one thing that’s ever mattered to him to save a world he can never belong to.

Separated by realms, Mackenzie and Hunter must save the other’s world. But the divide isn’t the only thing working against them. Beasts and men fight a complicated battle that pits Hunter and Mackenzie against those they’re trying to protect, and the clock is ticking.

Guest Post: What Sort of Monster Are You?

QUEEN OF IRON AND BLOOD, book two in the Shattered Realms series, takes place in a world of monsters. Check out the exclusive excerpt below, and use the Chimera Generator to create your own!

A figure waited on the ledge above him, silent, dark wings still. Hunter could feel her though, the ancient energy recharged like the rest of his world. “I cannot leave them sleeping,” he told her. “The risk is too great.” If Malkyn killed Hunter, if he were not able to return, these new Iron Bound would never be awakened. It would be an eternal wasting away, a thousand-year massacre.

The virago made a noise like the purr of a horse, though her face was something more human than mare. In all fairness, though, she was more beast than anything else. “Your queen can bear it, she thinks,” the virago said.

Hunter turned to look up at the virago, her dark mane swept back over the slick black of her shoulders. From his vantage point, Hunter couldn’t help but think this was the last thing some of the Iron Bound had ever seen—sleek fur on a winged beast, her curved talons shining like onyx overhead. Hunter nodded. “I believe she can—if it is to be done at all, Mackenzie has the strength for it.” But it would not be safe. She would not be safe.

The virago brought herself to her full height. “Your queen does not stand alone.”

Pretender to the Crown
(The Saga of Willow North #1)
by Melissa McShane
New Adult Fantasy
Paperback & ebook, 328 pages
October 30th 2017 by Night Harbor Publishing

Willow North is a thief, and despite her secret magical talent for sensing worked metal, she has never wanted to be anything else. But when her former fiancé appears on her doorstep with the eight-year-old King of Tremontane in tow, she is drawn into the political conflict surrounding the boy King’s ascension. His uncle, a powerful Ascendant with the magic of manipulating the elements, murdered the old King and intends to kill young King Felix.

Willow intends only to take the boy to safety, but as the days pass, she finds herself increasingly attached to Felix and unwilling to leave him once he’s safe. But the pretender to the Crown has a long reach, and as his men close in on the fugitives, it seems nowhere may be safe.

Guest Post: The Making of Willow North

Willow North, the main character of Pretender to the Crown, was never meant to be anything but a throwaway line. Background: my series The Crown of Tremontane was written out of order, with the third book, Agent of the Crown, written first. In that book, the main character, a princess and a spy, mentions Willow in passing, saying she always felt sorry for her because it was such a frivolous name. That was it—Willow was just a bud on the North family tree, a passing joke to give my spy princess depth.

I don’t remember when Willow became a real character. Certainly by the time I wrote Rider of the Crown (second book in the series, third written) because I had to go back to Servant of the Crown (first book, second written) to insert Willow and her history. At that point, she was an important figure in Tremontanan history, but I knew no more about her than that. But she had captured my imagination.

I love stories about rogues, and making Willow a thief satisfied that interest. But Willow had to be more than that; she had to be someone who could lead others. Willow starts the book a loner, focused on her work and disconnected from almost everyone around her. Throughout the course of the trilogy, she discovers she cares deeply, not only about her friends but about her country as well.

Willow also has magic in a time when the country of Tremontane is ruled by magic-wielding tyrants called Ascendants. Her relationship with magic is complicated: no one can learn she has magic, or she’ll be forced to become an Ascendant, but she depends on her magic, the ability to sense worked metal, for her living. Willow’s talent was my husband’s idea, and it’s the perfect ability for a thief to have.

It’s taken years for Willow to go from being a throwaway line to being the main character of a trilogy. I hope readers will find her as fascinating as I do.

  • The Orphan and the Thief by M. L. LeGette
  • Genre: Middle Grade Historical, Fantasy
  • Format:Paperback & ebook, 472 pages
  • Release Date: January 3rd 2014

From the very beginning it was all Toad’s fault. A blundering, quick-talking thief, he was the one who cut a deal with the dangerous Edward P. Owl: track down the ingredients to the Seeking Solution, or else. Twenty-five thousand gorents, he’d said to her. That was all it took for Melena, a lonely orphan with a knack for potions, to pack her bags and join in on the quest. From the majestic forest of Holly-Harp Wood to the labyrinth caves of Dunthur to the frigid waters of the Blackens, they search for Owl’s ingredients. Toad and Melena must face sea dragons, cave monsters, birds as large as wagons, kidnappers, and thieves – so many thieves. Toad’s in it to save his head – cross Owl and start digging your own grave. Melena’s in it to get paid so she can start a new life, one that includes her missing brother. But you really can’t trust thieves.

A night Toad had been sure could not become any more unsettling had taken a jarring left turn. So he couldn’t get the ingredients as easily as he’d expected. He was able to shrug that off. So what if it took time to get them. Toad felt that snatching up this odd girl had been the first thing to go right all day. Dawn was steadily creeping over the rooftops of the houses as they walked. Toad glanced at her. She was scrawny and her yellow-blonde hair was long and braided, wispy, brittle ends poking out at odd places. She was as plain as a broom with her second-hand clothes. He had been surprised to discover her to be so drab, what with her owning a Spit-Fire (they were common, but still costly) and being such a fluent reader. Then again, Wilson could read so that didn’t say much. “What’s your name?” asked the girl. “Toad.”

She covered up a laugh with a snort.

“What?” Toad demanded, stopping and facing her, early morning risers already moving around them on the street.

“Well — it’s just, you don’t look anything like a toad,” she said, awkwardly.

Toad shrugged and continued walking. “My dad’s got a sense of humor.”

A shadow stepped forward; a soft orange glow lit up a handsomely chiseled face with hard eyes.

Her brows steepened as she gazed upon the huntsman. “What are you doing here?”

His eyes were hungry. And very black.

“You are beautiful, even in rags,” he said, taking a step forward and eyeing her up and down. “What a waste.”

She crossed an arm over her chest, rubbing her hand along her other arm. “If you mean the dress, I assure you, sir, I wasted nothing in making it. I would otherwise have no clothes.”

The huntsman looked around. “This room is impressive, worth a king’s ransom, I’d wager.” His eyes lingered on the gold and gems embedded in the tombs before his gaze shifted back to her. “And it’s quiet.”

The half-smile on his face had a vicious quality to it. She suddenly wished they weren’t alone, that the queen cared enough about the catacombs to position guards this far in the fortress. Natalia had never seen or heard of the queen setting foot in this room since her late husband’s burial.

“I’m sorry, my Lady,” the huntsman said suddenly. “Wherever are my manners?” He bowed. “Call me Ace.”

“That’s an odd name.”

He laughed, but there was no warmth to it. “It’s a nickname. But I don’t suppose you would have heard of me, being a servant girl and all.”

She didn’t give him the satisfaction of appearing affronted. She waited calmly for him to elaborate. “I am the best archer in seven realms,” he said. “My father was better.”

“I hear he was good, at swordplay especially. But I doubt he had my eye for precision with a bow. It’s no mere quirk of fate I’ve earned the reputation as an ‘Ace of Arrows’.”

“Is there a reason why you’re here, Ace?” she asked sharply. Something long and narrow poked out from behind the huntsman – a bow. An arrow tipped with a raven feather shaft dangled from his hands. “I was about to go hunting,” he said.

“Well, I’m afraid you’ll find no sport here.”

“Oh, I beg to differ, my Lady.” He raised the bow, nocked the arrow, and aimed it straight at her.

She’s not a princess . . . but then, he’s no prince.

Polyhymnia is deep in enchanted sleep. High in a tower, behind an impenetrable barrier of magical thorns, she sleeps, dreams, and falls ever deeper into her curse.
Woken by a kiss, Poly finds herself in an alien world where three hundred years have passed and everyone she has ever known is dead. Luck, the enchanter who woke her, seems to think she is the princess. Understandable, since he found her asleep on the princess’ bed, in the royal suite, and dressed in the princess’ clothes.
Who cursed Poly? Why is someone trying to kill her and Luck? Why can’t she stop falling asleep?
And why does her hair keep growing?

Sometimes breaking the curse is just the beginning of the journey.

Poly was obliged to dissuade her hair from clasping Luck to her side before he could disentangle his arms, by which time she was feeling hot and bothered and misused.

“Don’t look at me like that,” said Luck, his eyes very green. “I don’t particularly like being co-joined to you, either.”

Poly, who hadn’t thought she was looking in any specific way, blushed.

Taking unfair advantage of her confusion, he added: “I thought princesses were meant to take lessons in charm and deportment.”

It was rather a shock to be reminded that she was meant to be the princess. Poly had to close her mouth, which had automatically opened to correct Luck, before she said something unconsidered. She wanted badly to know why she had been used in an enchantment, and what exactly that enchantment was. Answers would undoubtedly be more forthcoming for a princess than a lady-in-waiting.

“I thought that wizards were meant to be versed in international diplomacy,” she pointed out instead, feeling that it was time she put her foot down if she meant to be the princess. “You laid hands on a royal personage–”

“I didn’t; I kissed you,” interposed Luck, curling a portion of Poly’s hair around one finger and closely observing it.

“That’s what I said.”

Luck disengaged his left wrist from the last of her hair and let go of the lock he held. “Then I seem to have been laying my lips on you, not my hands. Come along, Poly, and stop arguing. We have a long way to walk.”

About the Author

W.R. Gingell is a Tasmanian author who lives in a house with a green door. She loves to rewrite fairytales with a twist or two–and a murder or three–and original fantasy where dragons, enchantresses, and other magical creatures abound. Occasionally she will also dip her toes into the waters of SciFi.

W.R. spends her time reading, drinking an inordinate amount of tea, and slouching in front of the fire to write. Like Peter Pan, she never really grew up, and is still occasionally to be found climbing trees.

Young Adult Supernatural Mystery

August 23rd 2017 by Dead River Books, LL

The deadliest secrets are the ones we keep from ourselves…

One year ago, seventeen-year-old Marayah Freeman nearly died in a tragic car accident that also took the life of her best friend, Hailey.

Memories of the accident plague Marayah, but no one believes they’re real. They say there was no shadowy figure on the bridge that night. No oil-black tears running down Hailey’s face. No guy who appeared from a bright light in the forest.

Frustrated, Marayah locks those memories away and tries to focus on the future, but the past keeps pulling her back. A guy who looks like the stranger from the forest enrolls in her school, and her nightmares are getting worse. But when she finds a note in her locker, the mystery of the accident becomes more terrifying than ever. The note is from Hailey.

“Marayah,

If I’m dead—

it wasn’t an accident.”

Excerpt

He was real.

And he was gorgeous.

I straightened and walked toward him, but the closer I got, the more I realized that he wasn’t quite the guy from my dreams. I shook my head, unable to make sense of it. He had the same tall, muscular build. The same copper skin and dark eyes. The braid running down his back was exactly the same as the one I’d seen in my dreams.

But his face was slightly different. Younger with higher cheekbones.

Those eyes, though.

The way he stared at me sent shivers across my skin. His eyes were the same.

“Did you follow me?” he asked, glancing toward the school.

“Yes,” I said, working to catch my breath and still my heart. “Sorry, I can’t explain it. I thought you were someone else.”

My hand raised to the medallion at my throat, and his eyes followed. His gaze narrowed. Darkened. His jaw tensed.

“Who?” he asked.

“What?” He had me completely frazzled. There was something incredibly intense about him, and it turned my brain to mush.

“Who did you think I was?”

I shook my head and my cheeks warmed. He looked angry, and I guess I couldn’t blame him. We were complete strangers, and I’d just chased him down.

“I don’t know,” I said, letting my hand drop to my side. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bother you.”

I turned to head back to the school, embarrassed and confused. Maybe I was going crazy.

“Wait,” he said. “You’re her, aren’t you? The girl from the accident? You’re Marayah?”

I stopped and turned back slowly. Something about the way my name sounded on his lips was so familiar, it made me dizzy.

“How do you know about me?” I asked.

He shrugged, but his dark eyes stayed sharp as he stared at my face. “A lot of people have been talking about you,” he said. “Wondering if you would be coming back to school this year.”

“Do you go to school here?” I asked.

“I just transferred,” he said, not offering any further information.

“Oh.” If he’d just moved here, he couldn’t possibly have been there that night a year ago. Still, this couldn’t be a coincidence. “Well, I’m sorry I chased you down.”

I wanted to turn and walk away, but something about the way he looked at me held me to the spot. He was a stranger, but I felt he knew a lot more about me than he was saying.

“I have to go,” he said finally. His eyes dipped again to the medallion at my throat, but he didn’t say another word. He simply got into his truck and drove away.

“Who are you?” I whispered, but he was too far away to hear.

Her novels often stem from her own experiences growing up in the small town of Hawkinsville, Georgia, where she learned that being popular always comes at a price and relationships are rarely as simple as they seem.
