Happy Weekend!

Happy weekend, friends! I hope you have a fun one, whether your weekend is going to be busy, or a quiet one.

My two chapbooks the Blank Page, and Nectar can be downloaded for FREE from Payhip.com.

Fully immerse yourself in the writers life – greeting the blank page, the doubts, censorship, challenges, bad feedback, and further down the line, what will my legacy be?

The free-verse, and experimental, poetry on living, loving, and writing asks other questions, such as will my writing ever pay the bills? What if the muse buggers off? And what would Beat writer Jack Kerouac have made of #poetsofinstagram?

Katie Lewington is offering you a personal experience, with vulnerability and heart on the page.

The Blank Page hopes to inspire, and entertain.

Poetry is my nectar. I have been writing it for six years, and enjoy reading it just as much (although I didn’t for my English GCSE!) Reading poetry I enjoy writers who play with form, and I like social commentary in poetry, as much as I do the haiku, the found poem, and the silly rhyme.

Bruce Kilarski is one of the humorist poets to have influenced me, and I love the rhymes in one of my favorite books, Alice in Wonderland.

Nectar marrs both social commentary, and humour, in the five poems in this micro-chapbook that were first published in Jotters United Zine and Selcouth Station.

La La Love success continues!

So pleased indie poet Harry Whitewolf enjoyed my book La La Love, and said this about it, ‘Love ain’t my favourite poetic theme to read about, but Lewington manages to come at the subject from all angles – from those small, tender moments that make all the difference, to heart ache, sex, and self-examination, and there’s plenty of other observations on life which fit nicely into the collection; and this is most definitely a collection that works well as a whole.’

A new Goodreads review has also materialised of La La Love, ‘this collection of poems fits my lesson objectives and when I am riding the train to Shanghai La La Love is easy to enjoy while listening to my 80s playlist.’ How lovely my poetry has been read in another country.

Healing Hope eBook

Hope Larsen is living each day of her life with a crippling guilt. The game of ‘what if’ has made it almost impossible to move forward from such a horrific event. In one life-changing moment, someone who meant so very much to her was taken. A man who once was her best friend. A man she fell in love with.

Now she must face the life she’d laid out before her alone, being reminded each day of his absence. The longing inside her, the desperation to be able to still love him without it hurting so much.

She just wanted to live without feeling the pain of losing Walker. But each time she attempted to move forward, there was that lingering thought that somehow she was tarnishing his memories.

Then he shows up. He waltzes right into her life as if he belongs. Strong, confident, and determined to make her see him.

When Travis Donovan crosses paths with the snarky blond, he’s intrigued. Her dismissal of him and his antics doesn’t have the effect she’d hoped for. In fact, it’s just the opposite. He’s not one to run scared from a challenge, but instead, he’s the type to fight even harder to conquer it.

Though she tries to fight her attraction for the cocky electrician, she finds that his dedication fascinates her.

Over time, Hope comes to the realization that there’s one thing that scares her the most. Travis Donovan reminds her of the one she lost.

That stride, that smile, even the way he torments her…it’s all the same. He could be the one to show her that it’s okay to move forward. It’s okay to love again.

Travis Donovan just might be the one to heal Hope.

EXCERPT REVEAL

She was a fiery little thing.

She couldn’t have been more than five foot two, one hundred and ten pounds maybe, but that was even pushing it. Long blond hair, perfect tits. The woman definitely made this job a little more enjoyable, even if she was currently staring holes through my back. Or maybe it was my ass.

I look over my shoulder, and again I find her eyes focused on my backside.

Yep, most definitely staring holes in my ass.

“You almost finished?”

I try to hide my smile when I turn around to face her, but when I see her cheeks flush again, I can’t stop myself.

“What’s so funny?” She narrows her eyes, doing her best to appear unimpressed. I know poking at her only infuriates her more, but again, it was an impulse I couldn’t control.

“I was just wondering if you wanted to grab your phone.” My smile grew wider when she arched her brow. She looked confused and again it found it fueled me more. “You know, to snap a picture of my ass.” Her eyes narrowed and she stands in a hurry and takes a step toward me. “Now don’t go getting all mad at me, princess, you’re the one openly checking out my backside. I should feel violated.”

“I was not.”

Even if I wanted to believe her words, her eyes gave it all away. She couldn’t even look at me.

“This job was supposed to be done thirty minutes ago.” She chooses to move right over the earlier topic. “Are you sure you’re qualified for this job? Do you even know what you’re doing?”

I nod, loving once again that this woman thought she could outsmart me.

“Does your boss know about your work ethic?” Again she tries for stern and offended, and again she fails. She was an open book, and I was enjoying every fucking chapter. “I think he needs to know just how rude and obnoxious you are.”

“Maybe he does.” I shrug as I reach into my back pocket and pull out a card. Holding out my hand to her I watch as her gaze shifted. “Give him a call, princess, and tell him all about how you’re sexually harassing his employee.”

She jerked the card from me and instantly placed her other hand on her hip.

“I am,” she pauses. “I never.” I could see the battle in eyes. “I did no such thing.”

Shrugging again, I turn back toward the job and finished up with the last few things. “Whatever you say, Princess.”

I hear her practically growl in frustration, just before her feet beat against the floor to the other side of the room. Without turning around I imagine her seeking out her phone. My smile growing so wide it makes my cheeks ache as my phone begins to vibrate and ring on my hip.

Instead of answering it, I hang my head and do my very best to hide my chuckle.

With each ring, it grows harder to refrain and suddenly I’m hit in the back of the head with something soft.

Turning around, I look to the floor at my feet and see a light blue throw pillow. Ever so slowly, I lift my gaze and find a certain blonde with fire in her eyes staring back at me.

“Did you just throw a pillow at me?”

“Yes, I did.” She didn’t even hesitate, “You should consider yourself lucky I didn’t go for the empty bottle instead.”

A moment of silence passes before she walks toward me once more and places a hand on each hip. The action alone pushes out her breasts, and it takes everything inside me not to lower my eyes.

“You are an ass.” The way she states this slowly enhances the humor once again. “For a business owner, I must say I’m surprised you are as credible as you are. You must spend most days in the office, otherwise, I’m sure it’d be hard to land a job.”

I stand before her, a screwdriver in one hand and a switch cover in the other, observing her every move. The way her nose wrinkles up as if she is confused by my lack of reaction to her words.

“And will you stop smiling?” Her words come out in more of a whine. I can almost visualize her stomping her foot.

“Why does my smile affect you?” I was rolling into dangerous territory here. Keeping things professional had never been a problem for me, until now. Messing with clients, or even renters of clients was something I never did. At this point though, it was addictive. This battle of wills between two stubborn people intrigued me. I liked the way she challenged me with just one simple look. “Does my smile make that fire inside you ignite? Does it make you feel something you don’t want to admit?” He taunted me a little more, and for a moment I slipped allowing him to see a trace of a smile tug at the corner of my lips.

That was my mistake, it was like throwing meat out for a hungry lion, it only gave him an invite to play a little more. “Tell me what part you like most?”

“You truly are an ass!” I hated how he affected me, but I also felt a spark of interest that I hadn’t felt in so long. His arrogance irritated me more than I should be allowing it to, but it reminded me so much of the person I had lost. The person I spend every day missing. They were alike in the way they held themselves, that confidence that gave them such a powerful impact on those around them. The mischievous glimmer in their eyes, it was all so much the same.

BC TEASER TOUR 2

EXCERPT REVEAL:

“See ya, Katie.” He flashes me his grin right when the metal slams. The loud scream from his exhaust wakens his ride while I step back further. Giving him a small wave, I’m about ready to walk away when all of a sudden, I bump into someone.
“Oh, sorry,” I mumble then look up to see Claire smiling at me.
“That’s so nice. Motherfucker is actually dropping you off even though you own a beamer.” Her eyes move to his Blazer at the sound of Caleb’s exhaust blaring out of the parking lot.
“He stayed over last night.” Watching him as he takes off down the road, I feel Claire’s eyes burning a hole through the side of my head. My lip curls up, and I can’t help but tip my head at her.
“Shut the fuck up!” Claire squeals, clapping her hands, banging her chunky silver bracelets together. “He popped your cherry!”
“Claire!” Shooting my arm out, I yank down her wrist. “Shh…” Pressing my finger up to my lips, I quickly scan over my shoulders to make sure that no one around heard anything Claire said.
“What?” She waves her head to the side to brush back her hair. “Holy fuck, tell me about it!” Opening the doors, I keep my chin low but smile brightly while we walk in sync to my locker.
“I don’t know.” I shrug. “He came over last night.”
“Apparently came is the right word.” She laughs.
“Claire.” I snap my head at her but can’t help but laugh, too.
Rolling my eyes, I start working on the combination to my locker, Claire props her elbow up on the locker beside me.
“So, for real, how was it?” she leans in toward me and whispers. Not looking at her while I put my bag in, I’m able to breathe out, “Unreal…”

MEET THE AUTHOR:
Natalie Barnes was born in Sault Ste Marie, Michigan on a rainy, September Thursday. She grew up on the Bay Mills Indian Reservation in Michigan’s eastern upper peninsula.

Married with children, she started writing as a way to have downtime for herself. Never planning on publishing until her first piece was finished. That’s when it all changed.

Not even four months after publishing, “Everything I Want,” she left her full time job as Accounts Payable and took the dive into continuing her desire for storytelling.

When she isn’t losing it with her characters, she’s jamming out or combing the backroads of the Upper Peninsula countryside. Blueberry picking to two-tracking and gathering; anything that has to do with the outdoors, she’s into.

Natalie also has an eye for indie films. Connecting with a screenwriter a couple years ago, there’s now a screenplay based on her first novel out there. She’ll continue to see where that goes and in the meantime, plans on having screenplays written for all her tales.

Always creating, always telling a tale one way or another.

I Knocked Him Out. Love at First Crime #2 Jessica Frances.

I Knocked Him Out
Jessica Frances
(Love at First Crime, #2)
Publication date: October 31st 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

She knocked him out, so he knocked down her walls…

He has irritated me ever since we were kids.

He is overprotective.

Controlling.

A complete jerk.

So, I knocked him out.

It was an accident.

I felt terrible … mostly.

It changed things between us.

Life for us both got more complicated.

Add in a stalker who has decided to take an interest in me,

And suddenly our worlds are turned upside-down.

Can things really change between us so fast?

Or are we just making a bigger mess than what we started with?

I think that hit to the head might have knocked things loose for both of us.

Because, from the moment I knocked him out, we saw each other differently.

As some people say, there is nothing quite like love at first … crime.

EXCERPT:

“You hit me!” he accuses.

“You sneaked up on me!” I snap back.

This is always the way between Declan and me, ever since we were kids. He never speaks to me normally or casually. He’s always angry, aggravated, or annoyed. The three As.

“I was calling your name; you just weren’t paying attention.” He says this like I’m the only person in the world to ever be lost in my thoughts.

“Well then, good call on coming up close to me while I was punching the shit out of this stupid bag,” I retort, already sensing any warm feelings that had started to work their way up from a guilty conscience disappearing.

“God, you’re annoying.” He shakes his head now, wiping his wet face with his T-shirt. My eyes betray me by peeking at Declan’s toned abs.

Stupid, smoking hot jerk.

“Ditto. Now, is there a reason you’re annoying me right now? Or are you just trying to fill your quota for the day and we’re a little behind?” I ask, shaking my head to get myself back in the game. Getting distracted while Declan is in one of these moods just means more insults with me looking like a fish out of water in response.

“I just wanted to tell you that you’re going to be late if you don’t leave soon.”

“Is that all?” I roll my eyes at him, something I’m aware annoys him to extremes. “I do know how to read a clock, you know.”

He narrows his eyes on me. Their blue color might be an exact match for a sunny, blue sky, yet I only ever see storm clouds directed at me.

The SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT with CHILDREN’S book AUTHOR PATRICIA FURSTENBERG @PatFurstenberg

Katie, thank you for inviting me here! I was the student always scribbling a story on the back of her notebooks. And when there wasn’t enough time to read, I would be reading on my way to the bus station, a 15 min walk.

I find myself influenced by what I read, and I gravitate towards books that fill my soul, ignite my imagination and speak to my heart. Poetry and history, past and present, possibility and certainty.

I write for children, mostly. Writing children’s literature is like having a good laugh with your best friend, it makes me happy. It is also a challenge, taking grownup concepts and wrapping them in bright, child-friendly packages. In an era of technology and terrorism, children need joy, books and imagination in their lives, more than ever before. Books make us human.
I write about friendship between unusual animals, about breaking barriers where friends are concerned. I write about diversity and about acceptance and love. And I write everywhere I am. In my car, at the semaphore light, a quick note in my notebook. I write in my head as I drive. I write before I fall asleep; some of my best ideas come to me in that no-man’s-land, when your body is suspended between reality and dreamland. Of course, most of my writing is done in my oasis, at my writing desk.

I have just finished a trio of children’s books depicting, in rhyme and with bright, happy illustrations, wonderful friendships formed between unusual animals. I have a few other stories bursting to come out on paper though. So excited!

I live in South Africa with my wonderful family and our two dogs. Coffee fuels me. My family supports me. When I don’t write I love to read, read, read, drink coffee (again!), listen to music and dance. I am a big fan of “Gilmore Girls”, “Outlander” and “Frasier”.

I am the author of “Happy Friends”, of the Amazon Bestseller “Joyful Trouble”, “Puppy, 12 Months of Rhymes and Smiles” (out October 31st), “The Lion and the Dog”, “The Elephant and the Sheep”, “The Cheetah and the Dog” (these three will have the Cover Reveal on October 31st at jessiecahalin.com and will be released on the 12th of November)
I also write the Sunday column for Mypuppyclub.net and I am a contributor for the Huffington Post SA.
