Queen of Iron and Blood

(Shattered Realms #2)
by Melissa Wright
Young Adult Sci-Fi, Fantasy
Paperback & ebook
Coming 2018

Mackenzie Scott is trapped in another realm, but that’s the least of her problems. Magic runs through her veins, and even now she can feel herself changing. She’s managed to help her brother, but in exchange, she’s turning into one of them. Worse, Mackenzie’s not just a monster. She’s their queen.

Hunter had one job: open the gateway between worlds to keep his realm alive. He hadn’t counted on betrayal, or being saved by a human girl. And he’d never guessed he couldn’t trust his own king. Now he’s snared in an unwinnable catch, and his only choice is to leave the one thing that’s ever mattered to him to save a world he can never belong to.

Separated by realms, Mackenzie and Hunter must save the other’s world. But the divide isn’t the only thing working against them. Beasts and men fight a complicated battle that pits Hunter and Mackenzie against those they’re trying to protect, and the clock is ticking.

Guest Post: What Sort of Monster Are You?

QUEEN OF IRON AND BLOOD, book two in the Shattered Realms series, takes place in a world of monsters. Check out the exclusive excerpt below, and use the Chimera Generator to create your own!

A figure waited on the ledge above him, silent, dark wings still. Hunter could feel her though, the ancient energy recharged like the rest of his world. “I cannot leave them sleeping,” he told her. “The risk is too great.” If Malkyn killed Hunter, if he were not able to return, these new Iron Bound would never be awakened. It would be an eternal wasting away, a thousand-year massacre.

The virago made a noise like the purr of a horse, though her face was something more human than mare. In all fairness, though, she was more beast than anything else. “Your queen can bear it, she thinks,” the virago said.

Hunter turned to look up at the virago, her dark mane swept back over the slick black of her shoulders. From his vantage point, Hunter couldn’t help but think this was the last thing some of the Iron Bound had ever seen—sleek fur on a winged beast, her curved talons shining like onyx overhead. Hunter nodded. “I believe she can—if it is to be done at all, Mackenzie has the strength for it.” But it would not be safe. She would not be safe.

The virago brought herself to her full height. “Your queen does not stand alone.”

Excerpt

“Light a mage-fire!” the red coated man ordered. I was screaming now, the sound shrill. The other men looked at their captain with wide eyes. “And risk the trees?” a young soldier asked. The older man’s gaze moved to the private, and the boy shifted uncomfortably. “The trees will not burn. Light a fire.” The captain’s voice was low and commanding with a threatening undercurrent no one seemed willing to test. A hand was over my mouth now, and I looked up wildly only to find myself peering into Jarvis’ youthful face. “Quiet, miss. They’ll only burn you as well,” the boy whispered against my ear. Even at thirteen, the boy was the same height as me, and he was strong. I fought him desperately, but he didn’t loosen his hold. “You’ve always been nice to me, miss. Please,” he begged. Aigneis didn’t struggle as they tied her to a hastily constructed pyre of wood. I screamed against Jarvis’ hand, my head throbbing furiously. They couldn’t do this! They couldn’t! “By order of King Raemon, this woman has been accused of sorcery. The punishment is death. All present bear witness. Light the fire,” the captain announced. Another red coated soldier lifted a torch, saluting Igneet, God of Fire, before throwing it onto the pyre. Wood crackled as it lit, some of it sputtering, and I was suddenly hopeful. I pulled on Jarvis’s hand. “The wood is too wet! It’s too wet!” I whispered furiously, but Jarvis simply re-covered my mouth before angling his head at the red-breasted captain. It was then I noticed the way the man’s hands glowed as he held them toward the pyre. The man was a mage. The king’s captain was a mage. I screamed again, and Jarvis held me. I kicked furiously, finally breaking free as the flames took hold, the wood near Aigneis’ feet beginning to smolder and pop. Two soldiers caught me before I neared the fire, holding me back when I tried to throw myself at Aigneis. Their fingers dug cruelly into the skin on my upper arms, but I barely noticed the pain. I wasn’t even sure I was breathing. Each breath was a sob. My lungs burned. The edge of Aigneis’ dress caught fire, and I struggled against the men’s hold. I wanted to shut my eyes but couldn’t. There was banging from a carriage behind me, and I twisted just long enough to see my father kicking at the walls of the coach where he was bound. I tried to move toward him, but the soldiers’ grips were too strong, too unyielding. It was then Aigneis screamed. For the rest of my life, I would remember that scream; the pain, the despair, the fury in her voice. The same emotions roiled through my veins. My screams met hers in the night, in the forest where a mage-fire was being controlled by a sorcerer. Screams . . . the smell of burning flesh. Those screams would haunt me forever. Those screams ripped through my heart. Those screams tore at my soul. Screaming . . . and then silence. Nothing left except the putrid smell of death, and the popping sound of flames. Someone sobbed. Someone yelled threats. Someone even scratched the faces of the soldiers. In the end, I’m pretty sure that someone was me.

Noticing my distraction, Allison took a break from her monologue to turn and follow my gaze. “Who’s the hunk?”

“That creep has been staring over here since we sat down,” I grumbled.

Allison smirked. “He’s hot, maybe you should go teach him some manners.”

I raised an eyebrow at her comment. “I will never understand your taste in men. He looks like an overly-primped jerk.” Allison raised both of her eyebrows in surprise. “My Xoe, you sure are feeling judgy today. That’s supposed to be my job.” She rose from her seat and looked over at Creepy Guy. Realizing her intent, I reached for her arm and tried to pull her back down.

“No way Al,” I chided. “Don’t even think about it.” Ignoring my comment, Allison pulled her arm away from me. With a mischievous smile, she hustled away from our table, then waltzed right up to Creepy Guy. She sat down on the other side of his table, facing him and Max. I shook my head and turned back to Lucy. We exchanged similar looks of resignation. I sighed loudly. “And so it begins.” Lucy began to reply, then quickly turned her gaze down to the tabletop. I turned partially around to see what had interrupted her. Allison was walking toward us, leading Creepy Guy by the hand. They came to stand at the head of our table. Allison twined her arm through Creepy Guy’s, which remained limp.

“Girls, this is Dan. He’s new here.” Allison nodded in Lucy’s direction. “That’s Lucy,” then nodded to me, “and that lovely example of radiant good cheer is Xoe.” Allison released Dan’s arm and took a seat next to Lucy, leaving only one option for Dan. I had a moment to glare at Allison for her cruelty, then Dan sat next to me with a quizzical look, like he didn’t quite know what I was. I quickly turned away and found my gaze wandering back to Max, who was now sitting alone, looking confused. He stood and walked straight out of the cafeteria like a sleepwalker. I stared for a moment at the now empty doorway, wondering what had gotten into Max to make him act so strangely. When I turned back to our table, I noticed Dan’s gaze had drifted to Lucy. The look he gave her was far different from the confused one he had given me. He looked at Lucy like she was a piece of meat, and he wasn’t even trying to hide it. I expected Lucy to be squirming under the pressure of Dan’s gaze, but instead she offered him a coy smile. My mouth fell open in surprise. I’d never seen Lucy flirt before, and I couldn’t believe she’d chosen that moment to start. Dan didn’t really seem her type, though I didn’t actually know what her type was. Lucy, like me, didn’t date a lot. Allison, on the other hand, I was used to. She flirted up dates on a regular basis, and had no problem talking to guys. She was born to flirt, and flirt she did. Before I knew what had happened, Allison’s flirting magic had involved Dan in our shopping plans for the weekend, which had been altered to movie plans . . . gre-at. I would have rather gone shopping, and that was saying a lot. Dan had not made a good first impression on me. My own thoughts began to tune out the conversation as Allison continued to quiz Dan on where he was from and any other inane fact she could think of. I felt uncomfortable sitting next to Dan. Waves of creepiness emanated from him. Okay, so maybe “waves of creepiness” was a little dramatic, but there was something very strange about him. He made my skin crawl. He shifted so that his elbow brushed mine, and struggled not to rub the goose bumps that instantly erupted on my arms. I scooted away and watched him have a seemingly normal conversation with Lucy and Allison, while I tried to pinpoint what had me on edge. Listening to him talk, he seemed perfectly normal, but his face shattered the illusion. His gaze never left Lucy, even when he was answering one of Allison’s questions. It was like he was trying to memorize every small detail of her face. It was downright unnerving.

Pretender to the Crown
(The Saga of Willow North #1)
by Melissa McShane
New Adult Fantasy
Paperback & ebook, 328 pages
October 30th 2017 by Night Harbor Publishing

Willow North is a thief, and despite her secret magical talent for sensing worked metal, she has never wanted to be anything else. But when her former fiancé appears on her doorstep with the eight-year-old King of Tremontane in tow, she is drawn into the political conflict surrounding the boy King’s ascension. His uncle, a powerful Ascendant with the magic of manipulating the elements, murdered the old King and intends to kill young King Felix.

Willow intends only to take the boy to safety, but as the days pass, she finds herself increasingly attached to Felix and unwilling to leave him once he’s safe. But the pretender to the Crown has a long reach, and as his men close in on the fugitives, it seems nowhere may be safe.

Guest Post: The Making of Willow North

Willow North, the main character of Pretender to the Crown, was never meant to be anything but a throwaway line. Background: my series The Crown of Tremontane was written out of order, with the third book, Agent of the Crown, written first. In that book, the main character, a princess and a spy, mentions Willow in passing, saying she always felt sorry for her because it was such a frivolous name. That was it—Willow was just a bud on the North family tree, a passing joke to give my spy princess depth.

I don’t remember when Willow became a real character. Certainly by the time I wrote Rider of the Crown (second book in the series, third written) because I had to go back to Servant of the Crown (first book, second written) to insert Willow and her history. At that point, she was an important figure in Tremontanan history, but I knew no more about her than that. But she had captured my imagination.

I love stories about rogues, and making Willow a thief satisfied that interest. But Willow had to be more than that; she had to be someone who could lead others. Willow starts the book a loner, focused on her work and disconnected from almost everyone around her. Throughout the course of the trilogy, she discovers she cares deeply, not only about her friends but about her country as well.

Willow also has magic in a time when the country of Tremontane is ruled by magic-wielding tyrants called Ascendants. Her relationship with magic is complicated: no one can learn she has magic, or she’ll be forced to become an Ascendant, but she depends on her magic, the ability to sense worked metal, for her living. Willow’s talent was my husband’s idea, and it’s the perfect ability for a thief to have.

It’s taken years for Willow to go from being a throwaway line to being the main character of a trilogy. I hope readers will find her as fascinating as I do.

About the Author

Melissa McShane is the author of several fantasy novels, including the Crown of Tremontane series, beginning with SERVANT OF THE CROWN, The Extraordinaries series, beginning with BURNING BRIGHT, and the trilogy Convergence. After a childhood spent roaming the United States, she settled in Utah with her husband, four children and a niece, two very needy cats, and a library that continues to grow out of control. She wrote reviews and critical essays for many years before turning to fiction, which is much more fun than anyone ought to be allowed to have.

Excerpt

Maybe their souls really were here together. Somehow, some way—but that couldn’t be possible. She shook herself, trying to shake away the feeling. Believing this was all real would only drive her further down the road to insanity. She was already having trouble getting a grip on reality as it was. She needed to stay grounded. Rational. Outside of here, she had a life to live. Believing in the reality of this Phoenix would make her want to give all that up. “What are you thinking about?” Phoenix joined her by the edge of the pool and looked up at the skylights. Telling him the truth would only ruin the moment. “I’m thinking about how we should spend our time here.” Whatever time they had, she didn’t want to waste it. Without hesitation, she dived into the water. She preferred swimming in the ocean. Water without limits. This water was cool, clear, tasted like chlorine, but everything about it still held a sense of magic. Kennedy floated at the deep end for a while before coming up. When she did, Phoenix knelt by the edge, minus his shirt. She smiled playfully. “Are you getting in?” There was no point in being shy. In this place, could openly show her affection. In this place…she was free.

“I was considering it.” He grinned. The water slowly rose toward him, Kennedy pushing it with her mind. Phoenix saw it coming, and shook his head. “No way. You’re not playing fair.”

“Then jump in already. Don’t make me drown you, Jorgensen.” His skin brightened, little flickering flames bursting from his palms and the soles of his feet. “It’s okay if you do,” he said, standing up. “I’d rather drown inside this infinite night than to ever see the light of day again.” With that said, he dived into the water. She felt him pull her under by her feet. Air bubbles escaped when she tried to laugh. But down here, she didn’t need air. The water protected her completely. She reached for Phoenix, found his lips, and gave him her oxygen. She thought about what he said, about drowning inside this dream, and wondered if it were even possible. If she could find a way to sleep forever, would it really be the worst way to go? He said it was his perfect moment. She supposed it was hers, too. To freeze it for all eternity…well…that would be okay with her.

12 Days of Fantasy for Christmas Day 5: The Orphan and the Thief by M. L. LeGette

  • The Orphan and the Thief by M. L. LeGette
  • Genre: Middle Grade Historical, Fantasy
  • Format:Paperback & ebook, 472 pages
  • Release Date: January 3rd 2014

From the very beginning it was all Toad’s fault. A blundering, quick-talking thief, he was the one who cut a deal with the dangerous Edward P. Owl: track down the ingredients to the Seeking Solution, or else. Twenty-five thousand gorents, he’d said to her. That was all it took for Melena, a lonely orphan with a knack for potions, to pack her bags and join in on the quest. From the majestic forest of Holly-Harp Wood to the labyrinth caves of Dunthur to the frigid waters of the Blackens, they search for Owl’s ingredients. Toad and Melena must face sea dragons, cave monsters, birds as large as wagons, kidnappers, and thieves – so many thieves. Toad’s in it to save his head – cross Owl and start digging your own grave. Melena’s in it to get paid so she can start a new life, one that includes her missing brother. But you really can’t trust thieves.

A night Toad had been sure could not become any more unsettling had taken a jarring left turn. So he couldn’t get the ingredients as easily as he’d expected. He was able to shrug that off. So what if it took time to get them. Toad felt that snatching up this odd girl had been the first thing to go right all day. Dawn was steadily creeping over the rooftops of the houses as they walked. Toad glanced at her. She was scrawny and her yellow-blonde hair was long and braided, wispy, brittle ends poking out at odd places. She was as plain as a broom with her second-hand clothes. He had been surprised to discover her to be so drab, what with her owning a Spit-Fire (they were common, but still costly) and being such a fluent reader. Then again, Wilson could read so that didn’t say much. “What’s your name?” asked the girl. “Toad.”

She covered up a laugh with a snort.

“What?” Toad demanded, stopping and facing her, early morning risers already moving around them on the street.

“Well — it’s just, you don’t look anything like a toad,” she said, awkwardly.

Toad shrugged and continued walking. “My dad’s got a sense of humor.”

A shadow stepped forward; a soft orange glow lit up a handsomely chiseled face with hard eyes.

Her brows steepened as she gazed upon the huntsman. “What are you doing here?”

His eyes were hungry. And very black.

“You are beautiful, even in rags,” he said, taking a step forward and eyeing her up and down. “What a waste.”

She crossed an arm over her chest, rubbing her hand along her other arm. “If you mean the dress, I assure you, sir, I wasted nothing in making it. I would otherwise have no clothes.”

The huntsman looked around. “This room is impressive, worth a king’s ransom, I’d wager.” His eyes lingered on the gold and gems embedded in the tombs before his gaze shifted back to her. “And it’s quiet.”

The half-smile on his face had a vicious quality to it. She suddenly wished they weren’t alone, that the queen cared enough about the catacombs to position guards this far in the fortress. Natalia had never seen or heard of the queen setting foot in this room since her late husband’s burial.

“I’m sorry, my Lady,” the huntsman said suddenly. “Wherever are my manners?” He bowed. “Call me Ace.”

“That’s an odd name.”

He laughed, but there was no warmth to it. “It’s a nickname. But I don’t suppose you would have heard of me, being a servant girl and all.”

She didn’t give him the satisfaction of appearing affronted. She waited calmly for him to elaborate. “I am the best archer in seven realms,” he said. “My father was better.”

“I hear he was good, at swordplay especially. But I doubt he had my eye for precision with a bow. It’s no mere quirk of fate I’ve earned the reputation as an ‘Ace of Arrows’.”

“Is there a reason why you’re here, Ace?” she asked sharply. Something long and narrow poked out from behind the huntsman – a bow. An arrow tipped with a raven feather shaft dangled from his hands. “I was about to go hunting,” he said.

“Well, I’m afraid you’ll find no sport here.”

“Oh, I beg to differ, my Lady.” He raised the bow, nocked the arrow, and aimed it straight at her.

New Adult Fantasy, Fairy Tale

Paperback & ebook, 326 pages

She’s not a princess . . . but then, he’s no prince.

Polyhymnia is deep in enchanted sleep. High in a tower, behind an impenetrable barrier of magical thorns, she sleeps, dreams, and falls ever deeper into her curse.
Woken by a kiss, Poly finds herself in an alien world where three hundred years have passed and everyone she has ever known is dead. Luck, the enchanter who woke her, seems to think she is the princess. Understandable, since he found her asleep on the princess’ bed, in the royal suite, and dressed in the princess’ clothes.
Who cursed Poly? Why is someone trying to kill her and Luck? Why can’t she stop falling asleep?
And why does her hair keep growing?

Sometimes breaking the curse is just the beginning of the journey.

Poly was obliged to dissuade her hair from clasping Luck to her side before he could disentangle his arms, by which time she was feeling hot and bothered and misused.

“Don’t look at me like that,” said Luck, his eyes very green. “I don’t particularly like being co-joined to you, either.”

Poly, who hadn’t thought she was looking in any specific way, blushed.

Taking unfair advantage of her confusion, he added: “I thought princesses were meant to take lessons in charm and deportment.”

It was rather a shock to be reminded that she was meant to be the princess. Poly had to close her mouth, which had automatically opened to correct Luck, before she said something unconsidered. She wanted badly to know why she had been used in an enchantment, and what exactly that enchantment was. Answers would undoubtedly be more forthcoming for a princess than a lady-in-waiting.

“I thought that wizards were meant to be versed in international diplomacy,” she pointed out instead, feeling that it was time she put her foot down if she meant to be the princess. “You laid hands on a royal personage–”

“I didn’t; I kissed you,” interposed Luck, curling a portion of Poly’s hair around one finger and closely observing it.

“That’s what I said.”

Luck disengaged his left wrist from the last of her hair and let go of the lock he held. “Then I seem to have been laying my lips on you, not my hands. Come along, Poly, and stop arguing. We have a long way to walk.”
